Front of house (FOH)

Front of house (FOH) is where the engineer mixes audience sound. Learn why its position matters and how to plan the console area in your venue layout.

The mixing position sits within the listening area, with a clear view of the stage.

Why the position matters

The engineer needs a useful listening position and a clear view of the stage. A mix position under a low balcony or tucked into a corner can sound different from the rest of the room.

For venue planning

Agree the FOH footprint before seating is final. Share cable paths, audience circulation and any restrictions on where a console can be set up.

Reserve the mix position before seating

If the room plan fills every available space with tables, the engineer’s position may become an afterthought. Mark front of house on the plan while the layout is still flexible. Discuss how the engineer will hear the show, see the stage and communicate with the production team. The venue can then consider that position alongside guest circulation and other suppliers.

Before the event

Is front of house part of the stage?

In live sound, it usually refers to the audience mix position. Label it separately from the stage and backstage areas so the venue does not reserve the wrong space.

What if the venue moves a table or barrier?

Check the revised plan with the production team. A small layout change can affect the console footprint or access, so use one agreed version for the event.
