Lectern microphone

A lectern microphone captures a speaker presenting from a fixed position. Plan the lectern, speaker movement, rehearsal and microphone handovers together.

A fixed speaking position brings the lectern, microphone and presentation together.

Audio for a fixed speaking position

A lectern microphone is positioned for someone speaking at a lectern, often on a flexible gooseneck. Its placement should suit the speaker and the room’s sound system. It serves a different use from a roaming handheld or a wearable microphone; if a presenter plans to walk away from the lectern, that movement needs to be included in the microphone plan.

Share the presentation format

Tell the production team whether there is one speaker, a sequence of introductions or a panel following the speech. Confirm who supplies the lectern and whether it already contains audio equipment. Share the stage layout, presentation screen position and any filming requirements before final placement is agreed.

Rehearse with the speaker

Allow the presenter to try the actual position and microphone before guests arrive. Ask the engineer to check speech from the intended speaking position, and agree the handover to the next segment so the programme does not depend on an unplanned microphone move.
