Backline

Backline is the onstage instrument equipment an act uses, such as amplifiers, drums or keyboards. Confirm exactly who supplies each requested item.

Instrument amplifiers, a drum kit and keyboards are examples of backline to confirm with the act.

Name the equipment, not only the category

Backline usually refers to instrument equipment used onstage, including amplifiers and speaker cabinets, and may also cover drums, keyboards or other instruments in a production request. The word alone does not define a complete package. A band’s backline request should name the equipment and any essential specifications instead of relying on a broad phrase such as “standard band setup.”

Agree ownership and substitutions

Record what the artist brings, what the venue already provides and what another supplier must source. Ask the artist’s technical contact which substitutions are acceptable before promising an alternative. Do not assume that a public performance photograph establishes the equipment currently available from Hamid Sound or from the venue.

Allow for shared equipment

If several acts will share backline, obtain their agreement and include the reset in the changeover plan. A shared drum kit can still require adjustments between performers; the running order needs to account for that work.
