Monitor mix

A monitor mix is the sound a performer hears on stage. Learn how it differs from audience sound and what monitoring needs to put in the artist brief.

The performer’s monitor feed and the audience mix serve different listening positions.

Sound for the performers

A monitor mix gives performers a selected balance of voices, instruments or playback so they can hear what they need during a performance. It may be heard through floor monitors or an in-ear system. The balance is separate from what the audience hears through the main PA, and different performers may need different mixes.

What to include in the rider

Ask the artist to identify the performer positions, requested monitor arrangement and any equipment they bring themselves. A request for several speaker cabinets does not by itself explain how many independent mixes are needed. Label the positions consistently on the stage plot so the production team can discuss the requirement without guessing who each monitor serves.

Check it with the actual performers

Include time for monitoring in the soundcheck plan. Agree changes with the engineer and artist; adding a monitor or changing the stage arrangement during the event may affect more than one person’s setup.
