DI box

A DI box helps connect certain instruments and playback sources to a sound system. Identify the device and outputs so the engineer can plan the connection.

An interface sits between an instrument output and the sound-system input when the connection requires it.

A connection tool in the audio chain

A DI, or direct-injection box, is used to interface certain instrument or playback outputs with a mixing system. Depending on the device and application, it can convert an unbalanced signal to a balanced connection and provide an appropriate interface for the mixer. It does not replace the main sound system, and not every source requires the same type of DI.

What to tell the engineer

List the instrument or playback device, its model if known, the available outputs and whether it is used in mono or stereo. Explain whether the artist also needs a connection to an onstage amplifier. Give the engineer the artist’s technical contact rather than choosing adapters from a picture of the equipment.

Confirm what is supplied

Include the agreed connection equipment on the input list and identify who supplies it. Check the actual instrument or playback source during the planned setup and soundcheck period so the show is not dependent on finding a missing interface at the last moment.
